While Descartes MacroPoint is recognized as the trusted leader for real-time visibility in the United States and Canada, not everyone is aware that we can also tracks loads within and across the border of Mexico. More freight is moving in Mexico than ever before and our rapidly expanding network of in-Mexico ELD providers has tripled in size, creating easy access to your carrier location data.

Why load tracking in Mexico matters?

Goods travel frequently across the USA-Mexico border with freight varying from automotive parts to fresh and canned food products, particularly out of Mexico. Most industry experts believe that the outbound volumes will continue to increase for the foreseeable future. Hundreds of millions of dollars are being invested in Mexico by outside companies to build additional factories to make goods for export which, while a boon to the local economy, also puts a further strain on carrier capacity crossing the border. In fact, the U.S. Census Bureau cited Port Laredo as the No. 1 U.S. port for trade with Mexico, totaling almost $20 billion in trade in May, alone, up well over 28% over the same period last year.

Mexico has, in fact, become the #1 trading partner for the United States. Several factors play into this, not the least of which are proximity and the decaying of relations with larger trading partners like China. “Nearshoring” (the phenomenon of migrating supply chains from overseas to countries closer in proximity, usually accessible by land) has led to ever-increasing focus on leveraging Mexico and Latin America in general in order to meet the needs of American corporate supply chains. This seems to be especially true in the automotive sector (although the flow of consumer goods is increasing). It also makes sense to have manufacturing closer to their key markets. All of this has led to more and more activity within, as well as in and out of Mexico for Freight Brokerages and 3PLs.
