3 Critical Requirements in a Digital Freight Matching Solution
During my recent customer visits and conversations at industry trade shows, it was apparent that capacity issues are still top-of-mind for freight management professionals. One indicator is the increased buzz around digital freight matching or capacity matching solutions. Faced with continuing constraints, companies need more flexible options to find capacity in a dynamic transportation environment, where customers need to reduce cycle times and are demanding more visibility.
Data Sharing, Visibility Drives the Future of Load Tendering
When a shipper posts a load to move from one place to another, it sets in motion a chain of events that is necessary to make that final delivery. Along the way, there are many processes involved, none more so than the tendering process. In years past, a series of phone calls was required to move a load. That changed over the years with technology, first the fax and then email, but even today, load tendering still requires a manual process to some extent.

Descartes Unveils Platform Giving Brokers Capacity Visibility 2 to 3 Days in Advance
Logistics IT provider Descartes Systems Group Inc. is piloting a capacity visibility tool it says will let freight brokers know as far as three days in advance which trucks will be available to move their customers’ loads. The platform is leveraging the pick-up and delivery patterns of the 115,000 carriers connected to the database of the former MacroPoint, LLC, which Descartes acquired last August for $107 million in cash and stock. MacroPoint is considered the pioneer in truck tracking services where the status of approximately 2 million trucks and drivers are connected through electronic logging devices (ELDs), GPS-enabled smartphones, mobile phones, and transportation management systems (TMS).
Where’s That Shipment? Shippers Demand Precise Load Tracking to Improve Supply Chain Operations
The bar has been raised for freight visibility. Shippers are demanding more precise information about the location and status of their shipments, and transportation and logistics providers said they are using multiple load-tracking platforms to collect and share that information. Shippers want regular updates on arrival times as well as status events.
ERoad, a provider of fleet management, electronic tax reporting and ELD compliance solutions for the transportation industry, has announced integration with the Descartes MacroPoint multi-modal supply chain visibility platform. ERoad said the integration will allow their customers to share real-time visibility with shippers while reducing the costs of satisfying the growing shipper demands for visibility and status alerts.
Four Reasons Why Freight Visibility Should Be a Top Focus
Despite the immediate benefits to the supply chain, there is still a lack of knowledge about the competitive advantages of real-time freight visibility. As the supply chain becomes exponentially more complicated, the importance of freight visibility increases due to its ability to provide real-time insight into the location and status of freight.
